How Much Wear and Tear Is Acceptable or Normal on a Volkswagen Lease?

There are four main areas to look at when examining your vehicle for excess wear and tear: the Exterior, Wheels and Tires, Interior and Mechanical. Check out each aspect to see how your vehicle holds up.


Any scratches, dents or gouges on a bumper or body panel that are larger than 2 inches would be considered excess wear, while ones smaller than 2 inches may be acceptable. Also, having more than 3 dings (no larger than the size of a quarter without chipping paint) or multiple chips, scratches and dents on one panel would fall under excess wear. Likewise, single chips on your windshield that don’t cause spidering may be considered normal wear, but multiple chips, cracks or pits that are greater than 1/8 of an inch may fall into the excessive wear category. In addition, if you have body work done on your vehicle that is not finished or done improperly, you may also incur an excess wear charge.

Wheels and Tires

All tires on your vehicle should have more than 1/8 of an inch of tread depth at every point in order to be considered normal wear. Each tire should also be the same size and speed rating as the tires that originally came with the vehicle. If you have snow tires on your vehicle, gouges, cuts or plugged sidewalls, this could be considered excess wear. As for the wheels, excess wear would be considered any unrepairable damage, as well as missing, broken or bent wheels. Minor scuffs may be OK, but there should not be any large gouges.

The carpet in your vehicle certainly goes through a lot, which is why some minor stains and wear is generally accepted. That being said, excessive staining of either the upholstery, carpet or interior panels should be avoided. In addition, any holes, tears, burns or singes in the upholstery (or convertible top if you have one) would be considered excess wear. As would be expected, the vehicle should come with all its original equipment, like the owner’s manual, each set of keys, navigation CDs and more in order to avoid any excess wear charges.


The mechanical portion of your vehicle definitely covers a wide range of vehicle parts and components. In general, all equipment on your vehicle should be operating properly and should be intact.
