How far can you drive your Volkswagen when the low fuel light turns on

How far can you drive your Volkswagen when the low fuel light turns on?

Most drivers in the market for a high-quality, fuel efficient vehicle are likely to turn to the Volkswagen model line; its selection of sedans, hatchbacks and crossovers has found widespread acclaim from industry vets because of the tech advancement and economic performance of each. However, even the best vehicles need to be filled up, and if you’re wondering: “How far can you drive your Volkswagen when the low fuel light turns on?” We’ve got your answer today here at Neftin VW!

Volkswagen low fuel driving range

Before we begin, we should let you know how your VW model determines its fuel level on your gauge. Your tank is monitored by a ball that floats in your fuel reserve, giving a reading to your dashboard every so often. When you’re running low on gas, your ball will be resting on the bottom of your tank, even though you might have a bit of fuel left to get you where you need to go. For this reason, you’ll often see your “low fuel” light come on when there’s about a gallon to 1.5 gallons left.

From there, it should be pretty easy to see how far you can travel on your remaining tank. Most VW models today are capable of achieving over 30 highway miles per gallon, so when you see your gas light come on, it’s a safe bet that you can last 30-50 miles or so before needing to fill back up!

How to calculate fuel economy

Since your model’s “fuel range” indicator is always an approximation, there’s an easier way for you to know how well you’re doing between fill-ups. Check it out below!

  1. The next time you fill up your tank, either reset your trip odometer to 0 or make a note of your full odometer’s reading.
  2. It’s probably a good idea to fill your tank all the way for this experiment; once you’re all set, go on about your life!
  3. Once you get back to the pump, keep a note of how much gas it took to fill up your tank; for this example, let’s say you filled up with 11 gallons.
  4. Take the reading from your trip odometer and divide it by the amount of gas you needed. Let’s assume you drove 330 miles between filling up; that means you achieved 30 miles per gallon this time around!
