What Does the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf Eco Mode Do?

If you own an e-Golf or are considering one, you are likely interested in the eco-friendly, energy saving capabilities of the model. The e-Golf is a full electric car with a range of up to 83 miles. Though this is more than enough for the typical driver on a daily basis, there are ways to further improve energy use through the Eco and Eco+ modes. So, what does the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf Eco Mode do?

Your 2015 e-Golf has three driving modes — Normal, Eco and Eco+. Each one brings a different set of characteristics to your driving experience. Utilizing the full power of the model found through the Normal driving mode, the e-Golf can deliver 115 horsepower and 199 lb.-ft. or torque. Eco mode, however, favors energy consumption over this power.

While operating in Eco mode, horsepower is reduced to a maximum 94 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. There are even changes made to the air conditioning system and maximum speed setting, which tops out at 72 mph.

This is all done to improve energy consumption. The e-Golf also offers three different levels of regenerative braking — D1, D2 and D3/B. These regenerative braking systems help control the amount of energy that can be harnessed from braking, which makes the vehicle capable of achieving a greater mileage range. In standard D mode, when the vehicle is fully charged, no regenerative braking will take place. Lifting your foot off the accelerator or pushing the shift lever to the left activates D1 mode to engage regenerative braking, with D2 and D3/B modes increasing the energy regeneration.

If you’ve been asking, what does the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf mode do, then you may also be wondering about Eco+ mode. This mode further favors energy consumption by reducing vehicle power to 74 horsepower and 129 lb.-ft. of torque, with an electronically limited top speed of 56 mph, while switching the vehicle’s air conditioning off. Drivers can revert back to Normal mode at anytime, making the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf a highly versatile electric car.
