Connecting to VW Apple CarPlay

Connecting your iPhone to Apple CarPlay in your Volkswagen should be a simple and seamless process. Once you’ve determined that your device is compatible, here is what you need to do:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Volkswagen through your vehicle’s USB port using a USB cable. You won’t be able to connect directly through the Bluetooth connection.
  2. Apple CarPlay should open automatically once connected.
  3. You may see a screen asking if you’d like to connect your phone. If so, hit “Connect.”

That’s it. All it takes is three simple steps to connect your iPhone to Apple CarPlay in a Volkswagen. Do note, however that if you’re struggling to access Siri, you must ensure Siri is enable on your iPhone in order to use Siri features in the car. This will allow you to control the CarPlay system using Siri, the touchscreen display or some of the multi-function steering wheel controls.

I have trouble to connect another iPhone to the apple carplay. I started with my iPhone 7 plus and it was very easy to be connected to the carplay. Then I used my another iPhone 7 to connect then it couldn’t be connected.

I too found that within three weeks of purchasing my new 2017 Alltrack, Carplay has disappeared. Never shows up. I’m using the same exactly cable that was used to set it up initially. Another VW issue……

  4. Qinxa says:

Can you only use carplay with the USB cable or is it possible wireless?

  5. Alex says:

My CarPlay worked fine but recently it just keeps saying connecting and then unable to connect, at first I thought it was my cable I’m using or phone but it seems to not be working when I try someone else’s phone or a different cable

    • Molly says:

I have been getting the same message. Sometimes Carplay connects. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it says it is connecting and then tells me it can’t find a device. Have you found a solution for this?

      • Sharon says:

Reset your car stereo by pushing the power (volume) button until you see the VW logo. I have to do this once in awhile to get CarPlay to recognize my phone.

  6. Gerald says:

I already replace my car headunit with the new one and different type from the original. And i can’t be connected with the apple carplay, is that the problem so i can’t connect my apple carplay till now?

You need to disable apple musics use of cellular data. If it tries to connect with icloud albums, it will not connect.

    Thanks sharon it’s working again!

  9. Alex says:

I simply connected to ITunes, installed the most recent update for my phone, then did a hard reset and plugged back into Apple Carplay in my 2019 VW Jetta. I was having all the same issues everyone here is having, but either updating the software further after the new IOS update through ITunes, hard resetting my phone, or a combination of both, worked immediately and now I have access to Apple CarPlay again. It was definitely an Apple Issue with the recent update, but it appears that they have fixed the issue and all is good again (I did this after speaking with an Apple Tech online)!

To reiterate, not sure if it was hard resetting the phone in my car with sleep/wake and center button, or updating through ITunes…all I know is my phone wouldn’t connect to Apple CarPlay, and now it is connecting again!

EXCEPT, if you have a 2016 Touareg, no USB, no CarPlay…serious omission on VW’s part, will have to rectify with third party interface box…

  11. April says:

When I try to connect my iPhone 7 to my 2016 Volkswagen Jetta, I get reading the usb device, then it says USB no playable files available. This just started happening and I’ve tried online advice to no avail.

I have 2016 VW Beetle Convertible R Line Standard, turbo. Never been able to get CarPlay. I use Waze as my navigator. Bluetooth worked fine until ~2/2019. Problems: the radio, cd, phone, anything I had on Bluetooth (YouTube) makes the infotainment system shut down and reboot/come back on. Troubleshoot has included: a new infotainment system, troubleshooting my phone w other beetles (problem does not dup), other phones in my car (problem would/ does not dup), my phone in other types of vehicles (problem does not dup), and my iPad Pro in my car (problem doesn’t dup). I’ve reset network settings in phone, gone to Apple store, called Apple, talked to VW Of America, posted problem on Reddit, stripped my phone of unnecessary apps (to rule out interfering w …something) … oh, my iPhone 7 worked just groovy ( previous work phone). I even talked to my phone carrier.
Oh, I have tried the aux, and receive the “no files ………”.

    So, what I know thus far: my phone (Iphone 6S+) has some issue w my infotainment;
I miss my 2002 cabrio glx
I’m unable to enjoy my 3rd vw.

    Gonna try the iTunes solution.

Doesn’t work, I’ll just start singing
