Difference Between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Two of the biggest tech giants have been making news in the automotive industry lately, with drivers eager to try out their vehicle interface technologies known as Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay. The systems are designed to allow drivers to hook up their smartphone to their vehicle and then receive information right to the car’s display in a way that is easy to interact with and understand while on the road. Though many manufacturers, including Volkswagen, are listed to have both interfaces in future models, we wonder what is the difference between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?

The obvious difference is that one is designed to work with Android phones, which would be Android Auto. The other is designed to work with the iPhone, which would be Apple’s CarPlay. But surely there must be more to it than that.

Similarities Between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Let’s first look at what is similar between the two, as there are for more similarities than differences. Both help you to stay focused on the road by using voice control. While CarPlay uses Siri, something most iPhone users will be comfortable with, Android Auto has its own voice system. Whichever interface you are using, you will be able to send and receive text messages, use navigation and more using the power of the voice.

The differences aren’t many, and for many drivers, won’t make much difference. That being said, while the Android Auto interface may take a little time to learn (though probably not much), the CarPlay interface looks very much like you would see it on an iPhone and therefore, seems a little more simplified. Both, however, have attractive designs that seem simple and easy to use, so it’s up to you to decide which one you like best. Another difference is that Android Auto will use Google Maps for navigation purposes, while CarPlay uses Apple Maps.

With both systems in their early stages, more of a difference between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay may develop. For now, however, both provide similar functions and there shouldn’t be any reason to switch sides with your next phone purchase in order take advantage of one system over the other.
