What is the Volkswagen I.D. BUZZ?

In the automotive world things like to come back in style. Whether it’s muscle cars or the iconic VW Beetle, past trends have a way of influencing the future leading many to wonder if the VW Microbus will ever make a return. With the I.D. BUZZ concept, that may actually be happening. What is the Volkswagen I.D. BUZZ you ask? We have all your answers here.

There is no doubt about it. VW is betting big on an electric future. The e-Golf in many ways is VW testing the waters and getting their feet wet with the technology, but the I.D. BUZZ promises to go even further, and VW is very serious.

“We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen.” – Dr. Herbert Diess Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand.

This concept employs not one but two electric motors, each powering a set of two wheels, making this all-electric car all-wheel drive as well. The two motors will combine to deliver an impressive 369 horsepower. That’s more than any factory Microbus ever had by leaps and bounds.

Autonomous technology in the I.D. BUZZ

The autonomous technology here is where things get really interesting. Though this vehicle can be driven manually, it can also drive itself. In fact, the steering wheel and pedals can be decoupled from the car entirely, allowing for full autonomy and freeing the driver to do as they wish.

I.D. BUZZ concept interior

Since the aim is for this car to drive itself, VW has put a lot of development into making the interior less of a car and more of a space. As such the front seats can be swiveled 180 degree to face the back and the rest of the passengers. Actually there are a lot of configurations that the I.D. Buzz concept’s interior can take. This concept car and the technology behind it is still a ways away from realization, with much of the technology not expected to go into production until 2025, but it’s good to know that VW has an eye on the future.
