Differences Between 2016 and 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Apart from the all-new Golf Alltrack model, the VW lineup doesn’t receive many huge changes for the 2017 model year. But that doesn’t mean that the changes and upgrades that have been made aren’t significant. The GTI is one model that seems to have received more upgrades than most, so we’ll tell you all you need to know about the differences between the 2016 and 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The GTI receives a trim level shake-up, making some popular features more accessible. You may be happy with the layout on the 2016 models, but if there are certain features you were wishing you could get, the 2017 model might offer just what you’re looking for.

Features on the 2017 VW Golf GTI Sport Trim Level

A major difference between the 2016 and 2017 model years is the introduction of a new trim level. The 4-door Golf GTI for 2016 started off with the S trim before following up with the SE and Autobahn trims. For 2017, a new Sport trim enters the lineup that delivers a standard Performance Package. To compare, here are some of the features you’ll find added onto the new Sport line:

2016 vw golf gti passenger space and legroom leg room18-inch Nogaro aluminum-alloy wheels

Bi-Xenon headlights

LED Daytime Running Lights

Keyless access

Push-button start

Black Mirror Caps

Standard Performance Package

  • Golf R brakes
  • Electronically-controlled, torque sensing limited-slip differential
  • 10-hp increase (210 to 220)

For those who want the Performance Package, it will now be even more accessible than before, as it also comes standard on the SE and Autobahn trim levels. With that said, if you aren’t interested in the Performance Package, you’ll find great value in the entry level S model without having to move up the lineup. Plus, the S trim level will be the only one offered as a 2-door model.

Features Added to the 2017 VW Golf GTI SE and Autobahn Trims

As mentioned, the Performance Package now comes standard on the SE and Autobahn trim levels, which might be considered the biggest change to the model for 2017. The Autobahn trim, however, does receive a few changes itself.

The Autobahn model will add certain driver assistance features as standard, like Blind Spot Monitor With Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor With Rear Traffic Alert and Autonomous Emergency Braking. If drivers do want more of these features, a Driver Assistance Package delivers Park Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Light Assist for the high-beams.

The differences between the 2016 and 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTI are restricted to these trim lineup and feature changes. You’ll still find the same 210-horsepower engine and same sporty design. “Plus, the S trim level will be the only one offered as a 2-door model.” I hate when VW does this, they almost make the perfect product you want but then they make a catch..only available on 4 door model or dsg only ect..

I couldn’t agree anymore with Scott, lately I’ve come to realize that I rather hold on to my 13yr old Jetta over making the investment on a brand new GTI that I’d end up settling for.

  2. Cristal says:

Great post Neftin! I can’t wait to get my hands on a Sport GTI hopefully by the end of the year 😀

  3. Moe B. says:

Why oh why can’t I get the cloth on any level? I hate leather trim.

    • Eddie says:

Scott, Brian and Moe B., you huys are spot on. I’ve been looking for GTIs for the last year. Don’t want to settle. Help us help you sell more Volkswagens, Volkswagen!!

do volkswagon sell the cloth seats over the counter?

Unbelievable how naive VW has been. They made R400 then abandoned it. The created a fabulous Golf GTI R and only gave it a 10 HP boost? As they say in the NFL, C’Mon Man. if you add two more doors and roughly 2 feet, give it more like 300HP? If I’m allowed to dream,,,, I guess this is it.

Most moms and pops aren’t looking for a performance grocery getter or a “hey, race you to daycare or the grocery store.” The GTI is a little performance rocket for the younger crowd or someone who likes speed! 4 doors are for grandpa or soccer moms! C’mon VW, stop all this 4 door sport car crap! It’s the same reason AND only reason I’m not buying a Ford ST. They only come in 4 doors!

While your at it, bring back a 2 door Jetta! Damn I hate when a great car company does dumb sh@t for no reason!

  7. Juan says:

Exactly, I’m still hanging to my 2011 GTI Autobahn Red 2 Doors because I don’t want settle for a 4 doors GTI. When I need 4 doors, I just use my wife’s SUV. I can’t believe VW doesn’t understand that. We need a 2 doors full Autobahn GTI. Otherwise, I will keep saving my money and I will put it in a used 911 instead of a brand new VW.

I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a
little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting
with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options
out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks!
