VW Golf GTI Clubsport S Performance and Nurburgring Time

News about a 40th anniversary edition of the Golf GTI has been out for some time, but Volkswagen recently revealed some exciting information about what will be the most powerful production GTI ever built. This comes during the model’s official debut at the GTI event at Lake Worthersee and after the vehicle broke a Nurburgring record. We have all the news you’ll need about the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S performance and Nurburgring time.

Nurburgring Lap Record for Front-Wheel Drive Production Car

Though we’ve known about the Clubsport S for some time, it was only just recently announced that the model broke the lap record for front-wheel drive production cars on the Nurburgring. The vehicle achieved a lap time of just 7 minutes and 49.21 seconds.

That time is 1.4 seconds faster than the previous record, which may not seem like much, but is certainly nothing to laugh at when it comes to race times. The previous record holder was a Honda Civic Type R.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S Engine and Performance Specs

vw golf gti clubsport s in red rear hatch designLike we said, this is the most powerful production GTI ever crafted. It comes equipped with a 228 kW/310 PS (305 horsepower) engine that produces up to 280 lb-ft of torque between 1,700 and 5,300 rpm.

With all this power, the car can go from 0 to 62 mph in a quick 5.8 seconds, achieving a top speed of 162 mph. The vehicle’s Nurburgring record lap time shows just how fast those figures really are.

The model has just two seats, helping the vehicle stay lightweight. It also comes equipped with 19-inch Pretoria aluminum alloy wheels, Dynamic Chassis Control, Bi-Xenon headlights and racing bucket seats.

Another benefit of the Clubsport S model is its numerous driving modes, including an “Individual” driving profile with settings specifically designed for the Nurburgring, which should please the 100 drivers in Germany who will be receiving this vehicle. A total of 400 models will be produced.

Now that we’ve shared the news of the VW Golf GTI Clubsport S performance and Nurburgring time, we have to answer the question of whether it will be available here in the US. Though Volkswagen’s press release did not specifically exclude the US market, other sources online suggest we won’t be seeing one here. Should that change, however, you can find all the latest updates here on the Neftin Volkswagen blog.
