What Is the Volkswagen Modular Electric Toolkit

Is there any vehicle out there that drivers want to see resurrected more than the VW microbus? Well, recently Volkswagen has revealed the Budd-e concept at CES 2016, and it could be the start of new efforts in electric mobility through the Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB). So, what is the Volkswagen Modular Electric Toolkit?

VW Budd-e Concept Specs and Features

Before we look at the details of the MEB, however, we should first discuss some of the details of the concept based off of it, which is a microbus named Budd-e. Of course, you remember those iconic VW buses from Volkswagen’s past, and this new one is a zero-emissions electric model.

In addition to some high tech features that allow drivers to stay connected through touch and gesture control technology, it has a pure electric range of 373 miles, which is truly impressive. It’s the MEB platform that helps make it possible.

Explaining the VW MEB Platform

Volkswagen’s claim is that the MEB platform will be capable of providing an electric range that is closer to the range found in today’s gasoline-powered vehicles, and 373 miles per electric charge certainly would fulfill the goal of achieving this by the end of the decade. In addition, VW also anticipates that the batteries in the MEB will be able to charge up to 80 percent in roughly 15 minutes.

Of course, achieving such a charge will require a larger battery, and the MEB is capable of supporting it while still allowing for a spacious interior and lively driving dynamics. This is made possible, in part, by making the 101 kWh battery flat, saving a lot of space.

Another key feature of the MEB platform in the Budd-e concept is that it has two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back. Each motor drives its respective axle.

Now, we don’t know whether or not a variation of the Budd-e concept will ever reach production, but for now we’ll remain hopeful despite waiting for a return of the microbus for so long. But now that you know what the Volkswagen Modular Electric Toolkit is, it’s probably safe to say that we will be seeing the benefits of this platform integrated into new VW models at some point in the future.
